The Annual Meeting is an important club function where we celebrate our 2025 Board & other volunteers, participate in the Election of Officers for 2025-26, and enjoy time with cycling friends. An on-line Electronic Ballot will be sent out in a special email alert to current members on October 1st.

President Bev Plass will preside over the business of the Annual Meeting.

6:30 - Light dinner
7:00 - Introduction to the winning Board of Directors election
7:20 - Tony Cruz, former Pro Tour Cyclist, 2000 U.S. Olympian, and U.S. National Champion

Bio

Tony Cruz is a father of 3 wonderful kids, Brandon 33, Alexi 30, and Aidan 22, and has been married to his beautiful wife, Jody Cruz, for 32 years. Cruz grew up in Southern California and began riding roads bikes in 1983. Witnessing both the men's and women's team take gold in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Road Race was a life changing experience for Cruz, and inspired him to start competing. His first team was Raleigh/Velo Club La Grange where Cruz quickly made a name for himself in the So Cal bike racing circuit, and began receiving invitations to attend premier junior camps at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs with the likes of Bobby Julich, George Hincapie, and Lance Armstrong. After taking a 6 year break from the sport to focus on raising a family and pursue a career in pharmacy, Cruz returned to the sport, and from 1996-2000 he became one of the nation's top domestic professional winning a national title in 1999 and the US Road Cycling Olympic Trails in 2000 along the way. He competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games for the US and from there went on the race in the Pro Tour for US Postal Service, Discovery Channel, Toyota United (domestic team) and BMC. A few years after retiring from the sport in 2009, Cruz began working in local city government on a variety of bicycle initiatives and active transportation projects. He is currently the City of Irvine's Mobility Programs Analyst and loves his job and role at the city.

Join us as Tony discusses his days racing as a junior, his club racing experience, and highlights from his Pro Tour racing days. He'll then explore the future of bike racing in America.

FundaySunday Remote: Dana Point toward Oceanside

Old Highway Bike Path

Lets do it again!
Ride along the beach though Doheny, Capistrano Beach, San Clemente, San Onofre,
Camp Pendleton to Oceanside Harbor !
We start in Dana Point Harbor, ride down the coast as far as you want, then RIDE back (or take the train from Oceanside part way)! The Short route turns back at the County Line, Medium goes all the way & trains back to San Clemente. Long turns back at the end of San Onofre State Beach for 34.5 miles or turns around at Las Pulgas fo 40 miles. The Long Plus goes all the way down & back for 60 miles.

ROUTE SLIP <= All 4 options - NO BASE PASS… Print & bring along

Short: Dana Pt to Christianitos & back - No Train
19.4 Miles   Map/Elevation

Medium: Dana Point to Oceanside & Train back to San Clemente
35.2 miles Round Trip Map/Elevation down to Oceanside Station
Trains run @ 11:24, 1:28. 2:35 4:28 and 5:23

Long:
Dana Pt to Las Pulgas & Back - No Train
40 Miles Round Trip   Map/Elevation
34.5 Miles if you turn back at end of San Onofre State Beach @ Mile 16.4

Long Plus:
Dana Pt to Oceanside Harbor - No Train back
60 Miles Round Trip   Map/Elevation

The ride starts at the west end of Dana Point Harbor Drive in Dana Point.  Park in either of the lots at the end across from each other, the one closest to the pier, or the other directly across the street.
DO NOT PARK in the Ocean Institute parking lot. We will gather at the foot of the Pier & roll out as a club at 9. There are restrooms at the start.   Map Link to ride start  W3W: finds.graphic.sentences

Train to San Clemente: The first train south from Tustin/Irvine (IEOC 857) gets to San Clemente at 9:05 - you can train down and wait for the rest of the group to roll by the station on route, 5 miles from Dana Point at about 9:20.

Camp Pendleton Access: IF you have military access or have a Base Bike Pass you MAY take the routes through the base between Las Pulgas and Harbor:

ON BASE ROUTE SLIPS <= Both options - BASE PASS REQUIRED… Print & bring along

Medium: Dana Point to Oceanside & Train back to San Clemente (ON BASE NOT FREEWAY)
36.5 miles Round Trip Map/Elevation down to Oceanside Station
Trains run @ 11:24, 1:28. 2:35 4:28 and 5:23

Long Plus: Dana Pt to Oceanside Harbor - No Train back (ON BASE NOT FREEWAY)
59.9 Miles Round Trip   Map/Elevation

Most of us do not hold a current BASE BIKE PASS from the USMC, so we will ride the freeway shoulder between Las Pulgas and Harbor Drive. It’s legal, faster, shorter, safer, but noisier.
See Base Pass info here.

After ride treat - We like to stop at the Scoop Deck inside Coffee Importers for a great ice cream…

Guest Speaker: Keri Caffrey
Topic: Cycling Savvy

“I believe we can transform our traffic culture into one which recognizes that roads are for all people, not just the ones driving cars.”

CyclingSavvy is the gold standard for traffic cycling education today. Based on decades of research and experience, Keri Caffrey combines active learning with dynamic graphics to teach the principles of Mindful Bicycling:

* Empowerment to act as confident, equal road users;
* Strategies for safe, stress-free integrated cycling;
* Tools to read and problem-solve any traffic situation, bicycle-specific facility, or road design

Keri Caffrey will present some of the safety concepts central to Cycling Savvy to empower you to ride safely anywhere.

Here’s a taste: Spot 14 hazards for the cyclists. Take the quiz and bring your answers to the meeting.

Bio: Keri Caffrey is a technical illustrator and graphic designer with over 30 years of urban cycling experience and a passion for teaching.

Through three decades as a bike commuter and recreational group rider, she observed many close calls and conflicts. Studying the behavior of both cyclists and motorists, she became convinced that the greatest challenge facing American bicycling is a lack of education, coupled with a destructive belief system Americans have developed about our public roads.

Keri’s mission is to correct this problem, and empower individual bicyclists to ride with confidence. Through CyclingSavvy, she and co-founder Mighk Wilson created a toolset for bicyclists to use on their own terms, to enhance their preferred style of riding.

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark. — Michelangelo

BCI would like to host a class - with a discount price fro BCI members.

The pace will be very slow so this is perfect for the whole family.
Be sure to dress warmly and jingly. You can decorate your bikes before you ride.
Roll out is 6pm.
