The truth about biking will set you free.

The biggest paradox in cycling is that many “common sense” things cyclists do to be safe actually makes them less safe! This is because we don’t understand how most crashes happen. In CyclingSavvy, we show you how those crashes happen, and how to maximize your safety with a handful of smart strategies that virtually eliminate those conflicts.

Annual Membership Meeting

Join us for our 43rd Annual Meeting and Officer elections!

The Annual Meeting is an important club function where we celebrate our 2025 Board & other volunteers, participate in the Election of Officers for 2025-26, and enjoy time with cycling friends.

President Bev Plass will preside over the business of the Annual Meeting.

We have scheduled Tony Cruz, The City of Irvine’s’ Mobility staffer, former Cycling Olympian and Pro Tour Cyclist to share his career highlights.

Antonio “Tony” Cruz started riding bikes with his father as a kid. He still remembers getting his first BMX bike for Christmas at about 8-years-old. In no time, he was able to ride a wheelie all the way down the block and rode that new bike everywhere. Around the same time, his dad began road riding and became a weekly bike commuter and racer on the weekend. After watching his dad ride for the first time, all Tony could think about was riding as fast as him. Upon entering middle school, he received his first road bike. Between riding with his schoolmates on BMX bikes and riding bikes with his “pops”, Tony was experiencing and exploring new roads all over LA County.

In 1984, Tony’s father took him to watch the Olympic Road Race at the Los Angeles Olympics, where he watched both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s teams win gold medals. It was then that he knew he was going to be a bike racer like his father and someday race in the Olympics. In his teenage years, he quickly became one of the top Junior racers in the U.S., finishing 4th at Junior Nationals. As an adult he won the U.S. Pro Criterium Championships in 1999, Olympic Trails in 2000 and represented the U.S. at the 2000 Sydney Olympics Games, fulfilling his childhood dream. After the Olympics, he was asked to join the US Postal Service team and gladly accepted the offer and opportunity. He spent the following 10 years racing in the Pro Tour (now the World Tour) on the best teams in the world and loving every moment of it.

“Bikes changed my life for the better and helped me develop some great skills, a strong work ethic and a very high level of fitness. I still spend a lot of time riding with my pops and my cycling and racing buddies. I also spend time in schools and with youths hosting bicycle clinics and bicycle rodeos. It’s pretty special to me to be able to give back to the sport that has given so much to me.”

Check back later as we work out more of the details!

Guest Speaker: Keri Caffrey
Topic: Cycling Savvy

“I believe we can transform our traffic culture into one which recognizes that roads are for all people, not just the ones driving cars.”

CyclingSavvy is the gold standard for traffic cycling education today. Based on decades of research and experience, Keri Caffrey combines active learning with dynamic graphics to teach the principles of Mindful Bicycling:

* Empowerment to act as confident, equal road users;
* Strategies for safe, stress-free integrated cycling;
* Tools to read and problem-solve any traffic situation, bicycle-specific facility, or road design

Keri Caffrey will present some of the safety concepts central to Cycling Savvy to empower you to ride safely anywhere.

Here’s a taste: Spot 14 hazards for the cyclists. Take the quiz and bring your answers to the meeting.

Bio: Keri Caffrey is a technical illustrator and graphic designer with over 30 years of urban cycling experience and a passion for teaching.

Through three decades as a bike commuter and recreational group rider, she observed many close calls and conflicts. Studying the behavior of both cyclists and motorists, she became convinced that the greatest challenge facing American bicycling is a lack of education, coupled with a destructive belief system Americans have developed about our public roads.

Keri’s mission is to correct this problem, and empower individual bicyclists to ride with confidence. Through CyclingSavvy, she and co-founder Mighk Wilson created a toolset for bicyclists to use on their own terms, to enhance their preferred style of riding.

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark. — Michelangelo

Guest Speaker / Program: Stretch Labs of Irvine

At this Thursday's BCI General Meeting, reps from Stretch Labs will describe what they do and demonstrate the process.

Admit it: we all know stretching is a key element in helping maintain flexibility — and maybe keep your cantankerous body parts from barking too much.

But we often don’t remember to stretch before or after cycling, do we? Maybe it’s due to time management and the uncertainty of what it is you're doing.

Stretch Labs' one-on-one sessions offer a great solution. A trained “Flexologist” works with you for a hands-on guided and assisted stretch, tailored to your flexibility and using your feedback.

According to several of our members, it really works!

Jersey fitting:
We will have a size sample fitting set there so you can try on before you buy the new 2024 BCI Jersey

There will be a raffle and refreshments - please come on down!

Guest Speaker / Program: The Importance of Bicycle Fit
Kristen Lawrence
of Pure Ride Cycles in Lake Forest will present the basics and finer points of fitting a bicycle to a rider. Frame size, seat height, seat angle, reach, stem length, knee position over pedals, cleat adjustment, bar angle and height, even the angle of brake hoods can make a ride more comfortable, more efficient and avoid injury. Kristen is a legendary bike fitter and will take us from the basics to finer points of fitting, sharing her countless fits from selling bicycles to new riders to the individualized professional fitting she offers.

There will be a raffle and refreshments - please come on down!

Guest Speaker / Program: Wahoo Fitness https://www.wahoofitness.com/

At our March meeting we’ll be featuring some of the most dependable and user-friendly GPS models, the Wahoo ELEMNT bike computers.

For many BCI riders, tracking cycling metrics likely started with a mechanical hub-mounted odometer mounted to your front fork. The only “data” collected was cumulative mileage. If you had one, you can probably still hear the “click” every time it counted one wheel revolution.

We’ve come a long way since then. From logging static mileage, bike computers have evolved to electronic units that track speed and trip distance via GPS satellite connectivity. This also allows for turn-by-turn route information. There’s a wealth of other data that can be displayed real-time, like cadence, heart rate, and power, with several ways to analyze what you do, and your performance (or lack of it!).

A rep from Wahoo will show us how available ride info can be easily setup and tailored to what you want to see, how the screen text size can be changed at the touch of a button, importing turn-by-turn ride files, and uploading ride data to 3rd-party apps like Strava and Ride with GPS. And if you’re participating in BCI’s Ridership Challenge, what you see while you’re riding can be seamlessly uploaded, too.

Have questions about other metrics? Bring ‘em on!

The rest of the Wahoo world, as in Wahoo Speedplay pedals and KICKR trainers, will be the second half of the presentation.
