Bio
Tony Cruz is a father of 3 wonderful kids, Brandon 33, Alexi 30, and Aidan 22, and has been married to his beautiful wife, Jody Cruz, for 32 years. Cruz grew up in Southern California and began riding roads bikes in 1983. Witnessing both the men's and women's team take gold in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Road Race was a life changing experience for Cruz, and inspired him to start competing. His first team was Raleigh/Velo Club La Grange where Cruz quickly made a name for himself in the So Cal bike racing circuit, and began receiving invitations to attend premier junior camps at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs with the likes of Bobby Julich, George Hincapie, and Lance Armstrong. After taking a 6 year break from the sport to focus on raising a family and pursue a career in pharmacy, Cruz returned to the sport, and from 1996-2000 he became one of the nation's top domestic professional winning a national title in 1999 and the US Road Cycling Olympic Trails in 2000 along the way. He competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games for the US and from there went on the race in the Pro Tour for US Postal Service, Discovery Channel, Toyota United (domestic team) and BMC. A few years after retiring from the sport in 2009, Cruz began working in local city government on a variety of bicycle initiatives and active transportation projects. He is currently the City of Irvine's Mobility Programs Analyst and loves his job and role at the city.
Join us as Tony discusses his days racing as a junior, his club racing experience, and highlights from his Pro Tour racing days. He'll then explore the future of bike racing in America.
