Congratulations to all participants!

AVG Ranked Performance is a new feature.

While BCI is primarily a social cycling group, there is a significant subset of riders who are performance riders. They enjoy fast, robust rides that challenge their fitness and ability to hang with others who have a similar mind set.

However, some performance riders are retired and have lots of time to ride their bikes. Others are still employed and can only ride one or two times each week. So how to fairly compare their performance statistics as posted on Strava in a useful and fun way?

BCI has come up with an AVG Performance Score, which is used to rank the riders. While they are separated into Age Groups on the chart as an FYI, individual rank numbers compare to all members signed up for the 2023 BCI Ridership Challenge who do not ride an e-bike.

(Total Miles Ridden / Saddle Time in Hours) x (Feet Climbed / Number of Rides) = AVG Performance Score

this comes down to:

AVG Miles/Hour x AVG Feet Climbed/Ride = AVG Performance Score

We take that number and rank it with all the other acoustic riders.

For instance, Rider A has the following YTD stats:

2500 Miles Ridden, 119 Hours in the Saddle, 50,000 Feet Climbed over 50 Rides, which equals (2500/119) x (50,000/50) = 21.00 AVG MPH x 1000 AVG Feet Climbed per ride = 21,000 AVG Performance Score

Rider B has the following YTD stats:

500 Miles Ridden, 25 Hours in the Saddle, 30,000 Feet Climbed over 10 rides, which equals (500/25) x (30,000/10) = 20 AVG MPH x 3,000 AVG Feet Climbed per ride = 55,560 AVG Performance Score

Therefore, even though Rider A has a higher AVG MPH over many more miles, Rider B has a higher AVG Performance Score than Rider A due to his much higher AVG Feet Climbed per ride and would receive a higher rank in the table (1 is the highest rank).

This system attempts to level the playing field so that all riders are compared on a per-ride basis, using average speed and average number of feet climbed per ride as the most important parameters in determining rank.

For obvious reasons, e-bikes are not included in this feature. If you see an e-bike member included in this chart, please contact Dick Brock, statistician@bikeirvine.org .

throughout 2024, the avg performance rankings will continue to be posted.

the board of directors has agreed to provide annual achievement awards to the top three ranking m/f members in each Age Group.

If you wish to opt out of the performance rankings chart but remain in the basic metrics (orange) charts, let me know.

Thanks,

Dick Brock, statistician@bikeirvine.org
