The Regional Parks Connector Bikeway (aka Peters Canyon Trail & Mountains to the Sea Trail) MAY be closed at the 5 freeway overpass due to construction August 31st through "late 2026"

Notice came out from Irvine Councilmember Liu - THANK YOU!

“Starting August 31, construction for the I-5 Improvement Project will begin affecting Peters Canyon Trail.

The trail will be fully closed between Bryan Avenue and Harvard Avenue/Walnut Avenue during portions of construction, which is expected to continue through late 2026. Please allow extra travel time and follow posted detours.
Daytime Hours: 6 am to 4 pm Nighttime Hours: 9pm to 5 am (so open 5-6am & 4-9pm?)

At least one lane in each direction will remain open at all times unless otherwise noted.”

OCTA provided detour map - Oriented to freeway of course, not the bikeway or North…
They suggest using Walnut, Culver and Bryan, even though the freeway work has made Culver worse than usual. BCI routes NEVER use Culver between Walnut & Bryan.

$716,000,000 project of OCTA & Caltrans to give I5 2 more lanes

Again; OCTA’s detour may be posted but uses Culver - a little bit shorter but the freeway work has already compromised the bike lanes on Culver. BCI routes always use Tustin Ranch in Tustin and avoids Culver in Irvine - even when free of construction - so see this suggested 3.1 mile detour to avoid 1.1 mile of Peters Canyon Trail bikeway IF IT IS CLOSED.

Upstream (NE):

X cross under Walnut [Class I]
#R exit path back to Walnut WB [Class I]
R Walnut WB [Class II]

* Use 2 Step Box Turn using crosswalk signals if hard to merge to left turn lanes.

IF the bike path is closed, you might not find out riding upstream until you get to Harvard, but if you know, get off at WALNUT Westbound toward Tustin Ranch.
Coming downstream you will be on WALNUT Eastbound and can return to the bike path just across the channel.

IF the bike path is closed, you might not find out riding downstream until you get under Bryan, but if you know, get off at BRYAN Westbound toward Tustin Ranch.
Coming upstream you will be on BRYAN East bound and can return to the bike path just across the channel, looping NE under BRYAN.
