Ed Chin Crash

On Saturday, January 24th, during the Club’s “Long ride”, member Ed Chin sustained serious injuries from a solo accident as he climbed up Jamboree (approaching Chapman) in the Tustin Ranch area. Apparently, Ed did not see a van unexpectedly parked in the bikelane. The impact caused Ed to stop breathing: his bike-frame cracked into two pieces. Fortunately, a passing Army medic stopped his car and began CPR, and soon, a passing cyclist-doctor continued the life-saving effort until paramedics arrived. Three other BCI members who had been riding with Ed stayed on the scene.

Ed was initially taken to OC Global Medical Center, but was soon transferred to UCI’s Trauma Unit in Orange. As a result of sustaining a traumatic brain and spine injury, he has experienced loss of movement in his hands and feet.

Ed is well-known for being a strong, skilled rider, but also regarded as a gentleman, a genuine pleasure to ride with. Ed is a podiatrist with a thriving medical practice in Irvine, a brilliant man who also has an electrical engineering degree. He is an accomplished artist, as well. He has a wife and two daughters.

We will post medical updates as they become available. Meanwhile, BCI sends prayers and best wishes for Ed’s recovery, and we send comfort to his family during this difficult time.

Update a/o February 10, 2026:

Ed's surgery to decompress and stabilize his neck was successful. Doctors installed a breathing tube (tracheostomy ie trach) to help with his breathing and to be able to clear his lungs of mucus. They are waiting for the swelling of the tissues and spinal cord to reduce. This will reveal how much movement he will regain, a process that could take weeks.
