"Cool Breeze?" Maybe they should call it the Chilly,
Misty Breeze!" observed Jim Dooley. Even with the late
start (9am), the foggy mist clouded our glasses. Wearing arm
warmers and light jackets, our band of 6 left the start looking
forward to experiencing the Channel Island Bike Clubs
Cool Breeze ride. Our group elected to do the Metric. After
weaving through the Channel Island Marina and some residential
neighborhoods, we hit a wonderful 15 mile stretch of relatively
flat and straight road up the Coast. Jim Dooley, Bill Clarke,
Wayne Chang, Rhonda Larson, Suzann Bowers and I set ourselves
in a "pace line" and had a wonderful time passing
cyclist after cyclist. The road ended causing us to enter onto
and ride a short stretch of Hwy. 101. Quick adrenaline boost!
Theres nothing like an 18 wheeler whizzing by at 70 mph.
to push you along.
We exited the Highway at Bates Rd. and turned left then right
into the 1st of 3 rest stops. You are immediately confronted
with a steep, nasty hill. After quickly shifting from high
gear to low, we continued our struggle up to the rest stop.
The food offered was average but the view of the Channel Islands
would normally be great, if not so foggy. After a quick stop,
we headed off again, this time turning inland towards a rolly
to hilly section.
Normally I complain all through the hills, but the scenery
mostly fruit orchards, farm houses and narrow bridges,
kept me enthralled. The hilly section ends at the famous Santa
Barbara Polo Fields. There is some flat road here (great place
to rest the legs) but after the town of Montecito, the

The 2nd rest stop is located at the top of these hills. We
probably spent too much time resting here but members of our
group, as well as other cyclists, were enjoying the wisdom
freely given by a knowledgeable bike mechanic "What
is that weird noise, oh wise one?" "You must learn
the meaning of trim" my little grasshopper!"
Moaning and groaning (mostly from me), we started out again.
We had to go back up one of the steepest hills, but we were
rewarded after the climb. Instead of traveling back through
the hilly section, the route turned toward the ocean and we
traveled on a wonderful, flat coastal road with access to
some beautiful Montecito mansions. We then had to go back
to the first rest stop (again, diving from high to low gears)
where Popsicles were being offered. Although chilly out, the
sweet, syrupy Popsicles were a refreshing and welcome treat.
We were also entertained by a large, plump gopher busy doing
his own version of the "Caddyshack twist"!
The last 17 miles (as with the first) were flat and fast.
After another trip onto the 101, we sighted frolicking dolphins
playing in the bay. We finished, finally, changed clothes
and then enjoyed a pasta lunch offered as part of the ride
package. Doug Phillips, joined us shortly and filled us in
on the Century ride. A number of other BCI Club members were
spotted as well. There are 4 ride choices offered, a short,
flat 34, the Metric, a Century and a Double Metric. With the
ocean views, and misty air, its clear why this ride
is billed as a cool breeze during the hot summer months. |
