June 1, 2003 -
On April 19th, BCI held it’s first “New Rider/Member” or “Newbie” ride
geared towards the beginning or inexperienced rider. It was
a great success. The turn out was fantastic – we had
approximately 25 riders, including the ride leaders, participating
in the event. Abilities ranged all the way from cyclist who
were very capable of doing BCI’s yellow and blue rides,
to riders that had never ridden before on the street, to
folks who got talked into, by friends, family and bosses,
getting on a bike, for the first time, and trying to complete
the 14 mile route. All succeeded without a problem.
Special thanks goes out to the ride leaders – Marlene
Hirsch, Wayne Kresher, Jon Ireland, Sue

| Butler, Jim Nilsen, Karl Bonawitz,
Doug Phillips and
Bill Sellin. A very special
thanks goes out to Karl for providing his expertise and considerable
wisdom and to both Doug and
Bill for their “voices”, cycling tips and leadership.
And another special thanks goes out to Doug Phillips for helping
me design a safe, scenic and flat (and I mean flat) course!
We hope to have other “Newbie” rides in June
and August, and possibly in October, so please watch for
the announcements. This is a great opportunity to coerce
a friend, spouse or family member out to give cycling a whirl.
You never know, they might like it and keep coming back.
(We hope! We Hope!).
