2014-08-11 view It is generally not a good idea to mix different brands of brakes and brake levers, or even models of the same brand.­ Brakes and their levers are designed as sets, and mixing and matching can result in too little or too much leverage on the brakes, and result in poor braking performance or locking up.­

News & General Discussion How much incline is too much for a new rider?view 2014-08-26 Something else you can try is working on your cardio.­ Do you have gym membership? 24 hour fitness has some good classes you could take to help you with that.­ Another thing is to work on breathing and staying relaxed.­ It's very important to remember to breathe especially when you're about to blow up.­
Another hill you can try is Orchard Hills on Culver and Portola.­ It's a lower grade hill and fairly safe.­ It's a good place to do repeats.­ If you want something a little more of a challenge, you can go to the end of Portola to where the toll road is (241? 261?).­ It's a pretty steady climb and it's over a mile long and also good for repeats.­
News & General Discussion How much incline is too much for a new rider?view 2014-08-26 Ok thanks for all the tips.­ I don't know much about bikes just yet and I'm pretty bad when it comes to mechanical things so I basically just ride what came with the bike.­ I did find it was a lot easier once I found the correct gearing.­
I ride an older Specialized Roubaix Comp and the front gears say 53/39 130mm BCD.­ I don't know what the back gears are, but the wheels I got are Fulcrum Racing 7 with an SRAM cassette.­
I actually ride Irvine blvd from Jamborree to Bake and then from Bake to Murilands and Murilands to El Toro park often.­ The first time I rode that route I had to stop 3 times, then twice, and then not at all.­ I essentially cut the ride down from 1 hour 45 min to about 1 hour 15 min.­
I guess I'm doing ok, but just need to put more time in the saddle.­ Hopefully I can get out and do a Saturday or Sunday ride with everyone once I'm not such a wuss.­.­
News & General Discussion How much incline is too much for a new rider?view 2014-08-22 Check your gearing.­.­.­on my single I have a 28 tooth cog and admit I have to use it on occasion.­.­.­.­you may even have to go to a 32 tooth cog temporarily if you don't run a compact chain-ring setup.­.­.­.­.­.­we ride a tandem and up Jamboree, we are always in the small/middle chain ring and large rear cog.­.­.­.­.­we don't over spin, but maintain a cadence that provides forward movement without over stressing our cardio.­.­.­.­.­we never try to use a large or big gear to climb hills or grades.­.­.­.­hard on the knees and you will "blow up" cardiowise.­.­.­.­I am at 200#.­
Try the Irvine Blvd grade from Tustin to Bake to develop your grade work.­.­.­this is a 1% to 1.­5% grade with a slight headwind and this will really enhance your cardio training without attack grades like Jamboree.­
Over time, you will be able to go faster and longer by virtue of time on the bike.­.­.­.­.­.­don't try to attack long steep grades too early.­.­.­.­.­.­listen to your body and increase your threshold gradually.­
News & General Discussion How much incline is too much for a new rider?view 2014-08-19 Ok I tried the ride again yesterday and I got past one of the 2 last hills, but I have a feeling it will be some time before I can tackle the last hill.­ I did slow my pace and try to work on my cadence and I noticed shifting up to a harder gear and using more muscles seemed to work better than a lower gear and trying to peddle my %#$%# off.­ I was really out of breath and came close to quitting, but I pushed through although my HR got up to about 170 and I had a horrible headach on the ride back down the hill.­
Let me clarify that this is only the 4th time riding this "new to me bike" and about the 8th time riding a bike in the last 25 or so years.­ I'll be 44 this year and I'm about 210 at 5'10 so weight loss is the main reason why I picked up a bike in the first place.­
I did look at the map and the elevation gain is 387 feet in about 3.­5 miles.­ The last hill goes up to 549 feet and adds a mile.­ That's the goal, but I'm not sure if I'm simply setting my goals too high too fast or not.­
I have yet to do a group ride because my limit is about 15-18 miles total on fairly flat elevation, but the good thing is I've gotten that ride down from 2 stops that took about an hour and a half to no stops and just over an hour in the 4 times I've tried that long ride.­

Jamboree is about 4-5% in most spots and occasionally reaches 6%.­ As you have heard, it is about getting into a rhythm that suits you and that you can sustain.­ Many riders "attack" a hill, that is to say that they ride far too aggressively on the lower stretches and get winded at the top.­ Done correctly, you should have enough in the tank to be able to accelerate over the crest of a hill.­
As far as cadence, I push larger gears and maintain about 40-60 RPM up most hills.­ But that is me.­ Everyone is different as their fitness levels are different.­
If you are getting winded, you may need lower gearing on your bike for the hills.­ We do these conversions at our shop all the time.­
