I am sure you got an answer by now, but, yes, I have been riding a 50/34 with an 11-27 for lots of years. For flatland riding, I'll put on an 11-23. For really ugly climbs like Breathless Agony, I have gone to an 11-34 mountain bike rear cassette, long cage derailleur, and a compact double.
Currently, we are using the SRAM Wi-Fly gearing in the back in either an 11-30 or an 11-32 with a mid cage derailleur with either Shimano or SRAM shifters, 9 or 10 speed. Most of the riders we have converted love the lower gearing for the long, steep stuff.

It seemed that at least half of the people who showed up at this ride rode somewhere else. The city streets of Anaheim are not the ideal destination to send a group of riders.
Agreed - this route comes up only once every 4 months. We get complaints about going to the same place all of the time also.

Wed 05/29/2013 General Meeting Event - We'll give you a Jersey for a Jersey Story! 7:00 PM

Description: Last year we had a lot of fun with "What do you carry in your Seat Wedge?" Club members brought in their seat wedges and our panel of judges weighed in on the contents and prizes were awarded for the best wedges in several categories.
This year we have a little different twist. We would like to see what you carry in your Jersey Pockets during your rides. Bring the stuff that you put in your Jersey pockets for your typical ride that may not fit in your wedge.
Now a bit about the Jersey. We bet a lot of you have one particular Jersey that you would call your most memorable: your first century or double, your longest ride, a European tour, your best (or worst) race, the ride when you met your sweetheart. Wear it to the meeting. You will be given two minutes to tell why this Jersey is important to you. Then you can show the judges what you have around back, in your Jersey pockets.
The winner will be awarded a new BCI Jersey! You will have to fill the pockets yourself.
What a great evening this should be! A light dinner and a lot of fun. We look forward to seeing you there!
Rules for "What is in your Jersey Pocket"
Your stuff must be able to fit in your Jersey Pocket. Nothing dangerous, please!
Participants must wear their jersey and empty the pocket contents while a judge is
present.
Mini pumps may stick out of the pockets but must fit securely.
If you usually ride with food items in your jersey pockets, bring some samples for the judges!

We need to try and keep large groups of BCI riders off of Irvine Blvd. behind the Great Park. Construction will continue for a least several more months on both sides of the road. The Aliso Creek Bike Trail between Muirlands and Paseo de Valenca is not good for a group of riders for it has a good number of quick turns, several blind corners and some quick short changes in elevation. Wayne
Wayne: We make all efforts to avoid major road construction. If we see a sheet that includes road construction, we usually announce a work-around alternative route before the ride starts.

Exiting the river trail on Imperial is dangerous as we have to cross the on ramp to the freeway. Suggest exit at Weir Canyon (longer) or Lakeview (shorter).

Sat Jun 22, 2013 All Day - Summer Solstice Remote Ride
We are doing it again - for the 23rd year - an overnight tour from Irvine to Carlsbad (and beyond)!
Please check your calendar for June 22nd/23rd - the first weekend of this summer and if interested -please see all the details at www.sellin.com/solstice/XXIII
Dev and I already drove the route from Carlsbad up to Vista and it will be a nice new option inland from the coast.
Sunday will have a great breakfast option and the San Luis Rey River Trail all the way down to Oceanside harbor for more breakfast options before heading up the coast into Pendleton - check out the posted routes!
Metrolink's $10 weekend pass makes it easy to make various short cuts if the full metric century is daunting.
Last year we skipped San Clemente to Oceanside on the train and got to Carlsbad strangely fresh and able to climb to San Marcos with no trouble!
I hope you will be able to join us.
