This side-path runs along the East side (Northbound side) of Harvard from SAN DIEGO CREEK at Barranca to the junction of the WALNUT PATH and PETERS CANYON TRAIL at the railroad tracks crossing Harvard.

This side-path is a wide sidewalk trail that has the inherent problems of most contra-traffic side-paths. The on-street Bike Lanes of Harvard are preffered by experienced riders, especially when riding South with traffic.

It crosses several intersections at grade - so Southbound riders are on the wrong side of the street and need to be extra aware of motorists turning on or off of Harvard when using cross walks across side streets @
Barranca, Warner, Paseo West Park, Irvine Center & Deerfield.

It is designated as a part of the Mountains to the Sea Trail.

There is a green trail marking in the northbound bike lane on Harvard, just north of Irvine Center Drive, but south of the railroad tracks. It's right where the sidewalk trail intersects Harvard. The green trail marking shows an arrow pointing southward in the bike lane. I'm concerned that this could give the wrong impression that cyclists should ride the wrong direction in the bike lane to continue on the trail.

(FIXED!) Bill met with John Graves, Director - Planning and Field Operations of the Irvine Ranch Land Reserve Trust, John let us know that the wrong way arrows at Harvard & ICD would be blacked out & revised by the end of February... which they are!

The "Mountains to the Sea Trail" markings all show the down stream path; They pop riders out onto Harvard from the end of the Peters Canyon Trail on the Como Channel access trail, and instead of crossing to the Northern end of the Harvard Trail at the tracks - they direct riders South, on the street bike lane to Irvine Center where there is a signalized cross walk. It used to point riders against traffic to cross walk East & South to get to the Harvard Side-Path; that was changed with our input so that riders cross ICD first WITH Harvard traffic, then cross Harvard with ICD traffic. The trail is marked as "Peters Canyon" because eventually Peters Canyon will stay on the channel, Harvard's Side-Path is a temporary detour for the future trail planned fo rth echannel ebtween Harvard Park an dBarber Park on the San Diego Creek Trail.

Side path trails on only one side, force riders to go against traffic; Harvard Side-Path leads riders accross the railroad tracks, Deerfield, ICD, Paseo Westpark, Warner & Barranca against traffic on the cross walks. (There is no cross walk at Deerfield and the cross walk buttons give a pretty fast WALK after a pretty long wait...)
