|
|
This path runs West / East from the West side of Jeffrey along the North side of the San Diego (405) Freeway to the SAN DIEGO CREEK Bikeway.
It follows the NB freeway On-Ramp from Jeffrey to YALE TRAIL bridge & connects there to the YALE TRAIL. The next connection is Culver. It continues with a cross walk across Culver & the NB 405 On-Ramp and into the "Culverdale Wilderness Park". There is a connection with the OLD SAN DIEGO CREEK CHANNEL and goes under Harvard with connectors. It then 'T's into the LOWER PETERS CANYON BIKEWAY (aka Mountains-to-the-Sea Trail) at the channel.
Path Connections:
Accross Jeffrey there are 3 mojor Bikeways; The JEFFREY SIDE-PATH North, the SHADY CANYON Bikeway South; the LOWER SAND CANYON Bikeway SouthWest Eventually the SAND CANYON Bikeway will extend East to the SAND CANYON Side-path North.
But there is no direct crossing of Jeffrey; riders must either:
A: Get off & walk your bike accross Jeffrey to 405 NB onramp cross walk & the Cross walk to the NB side of Jeffrey, ride up the Jeffrey sidewalk toward Quailcreek, where you can get onto the JEFFREY SIDE-PATH
-or-
B: Ride South on Jeffery over the 405 to Michelson, make a left at the entrance to Strawberry Farms & get on the East Bound LOWER SAND CANYON Side-path there.
This will get you to the JEFFREY PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLIST BRIDGE which goes over the 405 Freeway to the JEFFREY SIDE-PATH and future continuation of the SAND CANYON Bikeway East to Sand Canyon, or go under teh bridge to catch the North end of the SHADY CANYON Bikeway
-or-
C: Get off & walk your bike against traffic up the Jeffrey sidewalk to Quailcreek, where a cross walk will get you to the JEFFREY SIDE-PATH or North bound Jeffrey on-street bike lane. (It is not legal to ride against traffic)
To get to the 405 FREEWAY BIKEWAY from the SAND CANYON Side-path North-East bound, get over the freeway bridge at the end of the path, and turn Left to continue North on the JEFFREY SIDE-PATH. Leave the side-path at Quailcreek, crossing to South bound Jeffrey on-street bike lane to the 405 FREEWAY BIKEWAY just before the NB 405 on-ramp from Jeffrey.
From the JEFFREY SIDE-PATH South bound, leave the side-path at Quailcreek, crossing to South bound Jefferey on-street bike lane to the 405 FREEWAY BIKEWAY just before the on-ramp.
At YALE TRAIL there is a connector on the West side of the YALE BRIDGE to make easy connection to the YALE BIKEWAY.
At Culver there is a cross walk.
At OLD SAND DIEGO CHANNEL BIKEWAY there is an easy connection to go North along the old channel.
At Harvard there are connectors on both sides of Harvard Avenue bridge.
The West end of the BikeWay is where it "T"s with the SAN DIEGO CREEK Bikeway ~ Mountains-to-the-Sea Trail at the channel.

This path heads East just before the downstream Lower Peters Canyon BikeWay goes under the 405, and many people do not know about it...
You can also pick it up from Harvard where there are connectors.
The Culverdale Wilderness Park is a hidden gem of a greenbelt, and the connection to the Old San Diego Channel Bikeway is unique.
At Culver the 405 path squeezes between a leaning residential sound barrier wall and the tall CalTrans sound wall where it runs along the 405 On-Ramp. The path gets very little traffic as it is so hidden, but 2-way riding right there can get a bit tight so watch the fence line & walls!
The cross walk across the NB 405 on-ramp; watch out - motorists do not slow down from SB Culver!
Between Culver and Jeffrey the freeway sound is amazingly loud and reminds us why we like to ride bikes and stay off freeways. There is a good connector to Yale.
The trail now ends at Jeffrey. You must either walk North to cross at Quailcreek to go North or get to the Jeffrey & University paths, or get on the street and deal with the NB 405 on-ramp & Jeffrey bridge, and then the SB 405 on-ramp.
There is a graded bed along the channel where the University Bikeway is being extended East now to the Shady Canyon BikeWay/Trail, but the 405 Trail on the North side of the freeway clearly continues East of the bridge & will eventually get to the Sand Canyon Path. _________________

Thanks for the info Bill, I've been following it. I get off at that exit for work everyday. I've noticed they have the poles up on the bridge for fencing and they almost have all the paving done.
They have also graded a path towards the new staging area that was'nt there before. It's right above the flood control channel heading towards shady canyon. I can't wait to check it out!
c u soon!

A little update for you, They have striped the borders of the path. The fencing on the bridge is done and they have new street lights installed next the bike path. It really looks nice! They have'nt done any work on the extensions to the new staging area or Sand Canyon. The Bridge does have a taper heading towards sand canyon, but only a dirt maintenance trail. Hats off to the community of Irvine! What a GREAT cycling City!
Happy Trails!
