Add comments here about general striped Bike Lane issues; Width, transitions to shoulders, turn lanes, etc.

Some times we get a nice bike lane that shows where to go straight at a right turn pocket... like on ICD West bound by Wild Rivers. There is a turn pocket for cars, and a narrow but marked bike lane for us to stop & go straight, with out taking or being in the motor vehicle lane.

Other times there is a turn pocket wide enough for two cars, but no marked continuation of our bike lane.

Question Why don't we consistently have a striped through-lane for the bike lane if the road is designated & striped with a "Bike Lane"?

Very often I see a narrow through lane adjacent to a super-wide right turn only lane. That gives the cyclist the choice of using the left part of the right turn only lane, which is technically illegal, or to merge into the narrow through lane. If they don't stripe a bike lane between the straight through lane and the right turn only lane, I'd rather have a wider through lane and a narrower right turn only lane.

I agree- Tustin is much better than Irvine with this; notice Irvine Center East of the Toll Road... different cities apply different standards; The bike lane being continued, even if narrow, with the right turn lane in the gutter puts everyone where they belong.

At the Irvine Bike Plan Community Workshop held on August 18th, the Public Works Dpt. staff present were asked about the through bike-lanes in turn pockets & said Irvine's standard is to offer the broken lane line OR a turn lane if room allows. They said there is not enough width to fit a 10 foot bike-lane AND a right turn lane; I would like to see a 2 foot lane if that is all that will fit - just to show riders where to be and tell motorist where we should be as well...
