The Plan
Two incredibly scenic bicycle rides are offered: Irvine to San Diego on Friday, November 26… and on Saturday, you’ll tour beautiful San Diego Bay via the Silver Strand, with a finish by ferry back to the mainland. Friday’s ride, while not supported, features many opportunities for assistance. Don’t want to do the entire 86 mile route to San Diego…
then take the train to one of the many stations along the way. Luggage transfers to the hotel will be provided. Space is limited. Please bring only a small ―overnighter.

The Promise
The terrain for both rides is mostly flat; the weather is always great. You’ll have a tailwind while in the saddle and smooth sailing on the ferry. Remember, a picture ID is required to enter Camp Pendleton.

The Accommodations
Really nice. Singles & doubles are only $89. Your room rate includes a monster breakfast buffet (if you go back for seconds), high speed Internet, fridge, a balcony overlooking something and the comforting evening sounds of Amtrak.
Call 800-341-1818 to reserve your room. Be sure to mention that you are on the Turkey Burner Bicycle Tour to get the special rate.

The Departure
Daylight is short so we leave at 0800 sharp. Park in the ITC multilevel lot
and meet the group in the outside parking area where the LAX Flyer departs.

The Return Home Clean-up. Eat lunch then meet the Chicken Bus in front of the hotel at 1330. Load your bike into the buses’ cargo area, and then it’s all aboard for the ride back to the Irvine Transportation Center. Remember to bring a blanket or pipe insulators to protect your bike while in transit.

Only $35 per person. The fee includes your bus ride home, fuel, parking and the vehicle to take your luggage to the hotel. Please make your check payable to Richard Sheff. Catch me on the ride or mail your registration fee to me.

Rain cancels the ride. The hotel requires 48 hours notice to cancel a reservation. Contact me no later than Tuesday, November 23 if you have questions about the weather or ride’s status. You can find me at or 949-510-3455.

Expect a short speech on safety before we depart. You’ll be required to wear your helmet and sign the standard waiver before leaving.

Thanks for helping make this much more than just a bicycle ride to San Diego.
Have fun and enjoy the weekend.

Friday November 26
0730 Arrive at the Irvine Transportation Center @ Ada & Barranca. Load luggage, sign the waiver, pick up route slips and prepare for a great ride to San Diego.
0800 Roll out! Remember, this time of year the days are short. It’s no fun, and it can be down right dangerous, to ride your bike in the dark. Sundown is @ 1647 (4:47 PM).
1130 Eat a quick lunch.
1600 Welcome to the Best Western Bayside Inn. Check in, relax by the pool, then join friends in the Bayside Bar & Grill (it’s our happy hour location) to share some wine & war stories.
1800 Dinner’s on your own. Get together with friends and try something new. Little Italy has Mama’s cooking. Mangia, Mangia! Want to walk a few blocks further… the Gas Lamp Quarter’s restaurant choices are endless. The harbor area restaurants are only a 2 block stroll and the fish
being served is the day’s catch.

Saturday November 27
0700 Enjoy the complimentary breakfast buffet in the hotel’s restaurant.
0800 Ride around San Diego Bay. Ferry is $5. Bring exact change for the ticket machine.
1130 Clean-up!
1200 Check out and grab some lunch before we depart.
1330 All Aboard! Load your bike on the bus and depart for home.

Note: The 2010 Turkey Burner is designed to be a not-for-profit event. Estimates of the anticipated expenses were used to determine your registration fee. Should there be fewer than 15 rooms sold at the Best Western Bayside Inn or less than 32 riders on the bus, the event will go red and the event will be canceled.
