The JEFFREY OPEN SPACE TRAIL Side-Path will eventally extend North with the "Jeffery Open Space" greenbelt all the way to PORTOLA & HICKS CANYON Bikeways at the future Gateway Park, but now it has only 2 parts completed.
The lower end starts at the SHADY CANYON & SAND CANYON Bikeways at the JEFFREY BRIDGE over the 405 Freeway (just East of Jeffrey).
The SAND CANYON Bikeway will eventually run East along the North side of the 405 Freeway to Sand Canyon, and crosses the bridge to run West along University & through Mason Regional Park...
The SHADY CANYON Bikeway runs East under the South end of the bridge toward Sand Canyon then runs South into Shady Canyon & over to Turtle Rock.
The JEFFREY SidePath runs West to Jeffrey then North as a side-path trail across the SAN DIEGO CREEK TRAIL and on as far as Barranca.
From there you need to use Jeffrey on-street bike lanes North all the way to Bryan (Can catch the WALNUT TRAIL North of Irvine Center Drive to ride East to SAND CANYON SIDE-PATH or West to HARVARD & PETERS CANYON PATHS). At the uper North end of Jeffrey, you are just a block East of the HICKS CANYON Bikeway

More sections will be added as each block is developed.

The JEFFREY SIDE-PATH is a wide sidewalk 'side-path' on the East (Northbound) side of Jeffrey;
This side-path trail that has the inherent problems of most contra-traffic side-paths. The on-street Bike Lanes of Jeffrey are preffered by experienced riders, especially when riding South & downhill with traffic.

It crosses several intersections at grade - so Southbound riders are on the wrong side of the street and need to be extra aware of motorists turning on or off of Jeffrey when using cross walks across side streets @ Quailcreek, Alton & Gelson's Market drive way.

It resumes again at Bryan, rolling through the new Jeffrey Spine Open Space park along the East side of Jeffrey as far as Irvine Blvd.

Path Connections:
It starts from the new JEFFREY BRIDGE where at the SAND CANYON Bikeway crosses teh 405 Freeway. The North end of the SHADY CANYON Bikeway is just over the bridge on teh other side of the 405. With a short U-turn you can go West across Jeffrey at Quailcreek & get over to the East end of the 405 FREEWAY Bikeway heading West. Farther North the bikeway crosses the SAN DIEGO CREEK Bikeway

In the future the SAND CANYON Bikeway will be extended East from the JEFFREY BRIDGE to SAND CANYON Sidepath.

In case you have not found out, you won't want to find out by trying to drive it; Jeffrey Road has been shifted East into the easement where some day the JEFFREY Side Path will go, so that an underpass can be dug out under the railroad tracks & future WALNUT Bikeway Bridge over Jeffrey...

This project will not get the street finished under the new bridge until December 2009 ~ and hopefully the JEFFREY Side Path & WALNUT Bikeway Bridge will be open for bikes soon thereafter... In the mean time
THERE ARE NO BIKE LANES ANYMORE ON JEFFREY ROAD between WALNUT AND ICD and NO ACCESS TO THE WALNUT BIKEWAY ~ Take Yale or Sand Canyon across town instead!

Subject: Bike Lane Closure on Jeffrey

Hi Bill,
I was wondering if you could pass some information along to fellow BCI members on a recent closure of the on-street bike lanes on Jeffrey Road between Irvine Center Drive and Walnut?
These bike lanes will need to be closed until December 2009 due to the construction of the Jeffrey Grade Separation project at the railroad tracks.
Detour signs have been put in place to help people find a safe route around this major construction zone. Everyone’s patience is greatly appreciated during the construction period.
Questions about the construction can be forwarded to the Project Manager, Michael Aminian, at (949) 726-8095.

Thank you,
Katie Berg-Curtis
