Named for Walnut Avenue (which it sort of paralels between the Peters Canyon channel and Jeffrey), this PATH follows the railroad right of way and power lines across town. It is also known as the Edison Easment Path and the Railroad Right-of-Way Path. It starts Eastbound at the edge of Tustin, along the Soth side of teh rail road at the future (not done yet) PETERS CANYON PATH along the channel. Now just a dead end spur from the channel to Harvard, no one uses this first bit yet... the PATH crosses Harvard (no cross walk or control) and connects to the HARVARD SIDE PATH.
It continues East through the "Incredible Edible Garden" to Flagstone Park.
Crosses Culver Drive on a bridge; Goes under Yale Avenue; passes Hoeptner Park...
the PATH crosses Jeffrey Road (no cross walk or control) and some day will connect to the future JEFFREY SIDE PATH over a bridge.
It passes along the Oak Creek Golf Course and ends (for now) at the SAND CANYON SIDE PATH

The City of Irvine has CLOSED the WALNUT PATH due to construction at Jeffrey Road!
The City is moving Jeffrey Road east so they can tunnel UNDER the railroad & make an underpass just like Culver Drive!
Eventually there will be a bike bridge to allow the WALNUT PATH to get over Jeffrey, but for now, the entire 2.25 miles of the East end of the WALNUT PATH is CLOSED between Yale and Sand Canyon!
From the West there are signs at Yale, but you can ride East to a barrier at Jeffrey; it is no longer easy to walk around it on the grass & get to Jeffrey... but you can take the HOEPTMER Bike Path to get out to Jeffrey at Smoke tree.
From the East end there is a sign at the SAND CANYON SIDE PATH letting you know the WALNUT Bikeway is closed... if you don't believe it & go on, you will be stopped by a cement barier and serious chain link fencing and will have to back track the full mile back to Sand Canyon.
The "Official" Detour is to leave the WALNUT Bikeway at Yale on-street Bike Lanes or sidewalks, jog South to Irvine Center Drive on-street Bike Lanes or sidewalks between Yale and Sand Canyon, then SAND CANYON SIDE PATH to the East end of the closed WALNUT PATH.
Unofficially, Eastbound, you can get within 100 feet of Jeffrey Road, turn down the HOEPTNER PATH along the East edge of Hoeptner Park to Smoketree. That will get you back out to Jeffrey Road - but then you have to get to Irvine Center Drive to continue East 1 mile to the SAND CANYON SIDEPATH or Sand Canyon road... or cross uncontrolled Jeffrey to go North with no Bike Lane or shoulder, unless you go South to Irvene Center & make a U-Turn or cross walk to get Northbound on Jeffrey with no Bike Lane or shoulder. see http://bikeirvine.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1207
Westbound detour - instead of Sand Canyon, try to Oak Canyon Rd to Valley Oak Dr to ICD: It's only a block off Sand Canyon & ICD, saves no distance, but has much less traffic... At Jeffrey you might consider walking your bike 1,300 feet to Smoketree, where you can then head up teh HOEPTNER path to the WALNUT West of teh construction mess; saves riding 3/4 mile of ICD & 1/2 mile of Yale from the official Detour...
CLOSURE WILL BE FOR OVER 2 YEARS! (December 2009) |

In case you have not found out, you won't want to find out by trying to drive it; Jeffrey Road has been shifted East into the easement where some day the JEFFREY Side Path will go, so that an underpass can be dug out under the railroad tracks & future WALNUT Bikeway Bridge over Jeffrey...
This project will not get the street finished under the new bridge until December 2009 ~ and hopefully the JEFFREY Side Path & WALNUT Bikeway Bridge will be open for bikes soon thereafter... In the mean time
THERE ARE NO BIKE LANES ANYMORE ON JEFFREY ROAD between WALNUT AND ICD and NO ACCESS TO THE WALNUT BIKEWAY ~ Take Yale or Sand Canyon across town instead!
{and see Sluggo's optional detour notes above for shortcuts to the official posted detour...

Subject: Bike Lane Closure on Jeffrey
Hi Bill,
I was wondering if you could pass some information along to fellow BCI members on a recent closure of the on-street bike lanes on Jeffrey Road between Irvine Center Drive and Walnut?
These bike lanes will need to be closed until December 2009 due to the construction of the Jeffrey Grade Separation project at the railroad tracks.
Detour signs have been put in place to help people find a safe route around this major construction zone. Everyone’s patience is greatly appreciated during the construction period.
Questions about the construction can be forwarded to the Project Manager, Michael Aminian, at (949) 726-8095.
Thank you,
Katie Berg-Curtis
