Feb-06-2012

06:00 PMFull Moon Ride. Riders must have adequate lighting. Ride starts at 6:00. An hour ride to the coffee stop 20 min break and hour ride back.
Join other BCI Lunatics for another night time ride! This time we'll go down Harvard to the San Diego Creek bike trail, then turn east on the University Trail through Mason Regional Park, and follow the trail to Quail Hill for refreshments. We'll return by taking old Laguna Canyon Road to the San Diego Creek trail through Woodbridge, and return to Deerfield via Harvard.

This will be a no-drop fun ride at an easy pace. We'll leave Deerfield Park at 6:00pm, expect to be at Quail Hill Plaza around 7:00, and return by 8:30. Ride distance will total 20 miles. Moon rise on the 6th is at 4:35pm, and the easterly ride toward Quail Hill should make for good views of the moon. Optional dinner at Culver Plaza at the end of the ride for those interested.

The ride will be led by BCI member Bob McHenry, an experienced commuter and tour leader. Headlights and taillights are required to participate, and eye protection with clear lenses is strongly recommended. Questions about this ride: email to bob.mc@cox.net.

09:00 AM MT Bike RideBased on your responses, it sounds like we will have a group with fairly compatible riding skills. So, we will most likely not be doing the 'newbie' ride and opt for the intermediate route which is a bit more strenuous, but not dangerous. We can always change the route if requested.

The ride will be a 10-mile out-and-back mountain bike ride with about 1500' of climbing. The course will be a lollipop loop on single and double-track trails. We will ride as a group. These trails are frequented by equestrians and other riders. Trail etiquette will be reviewed before we head out. Mountain Bike Ride

You should have: Helmet, eye wear, spare tube, tire boot, tire levers, multi-tool, hand pump or C02 inflater, chain quick-link, water (at least 50 ounces), and your favorite snack (energy bar, energy gel, banana) or sports drink. BCI jerseys are encouraged. I will bring a camera to record the 'fun'.

Everyone will need to sign in and sign the club waiver, just like we do for any of the regular club rides. Please let me know if you will be bringing a friend. Guests are welcome.

I am really looking forward to riding with you all! Next ride: Blackstar Canyon to Sierra Peak! Kind regards,Randy Profeta 949.863.1982, 949.525.6070 (cell)

08:00 AM - 08:45 AMFlat Tire Clinic: Before the morning ride. Worried about having a flat & having to walk back to the start of your ride? Get over it! Join Bill (BCI#2) for a quick free hands-on class going through the step by step process of fixing a flat tire on your own bike! We will meet a 8am before the Saturday rides & should have all the bikes back together & ready to ride by 8:45! If not already packing - each rider should carry a patch kit, spare tube & pump. Bring them to practice with on your bike. The opinionated suggestions of the instructor: Make your sure spare tube is the right size for your tires and has the right valve for your wheels. Glue on patches are the best. Topeak's RoadMorph pump is awesome; 160psi, gauge, 'T' handle & foot peg makes it transform into a floor pump. You MAY need tire levers or an adjustable wrench if your axel does not have quick release, but you can wait until after the class to find out & see Bill's suggestions… questions? Bill@Bikeirvine.org

09:00 AM Bike/CampOur next biking/camping trip has been scheduled and the reservation made. Gamble on good weather and check out inland turf before summer heat arrives. We'll leave from Placentia on Saturday morning, pedal up the Santa Ana River, through Corona and then south, have lunch at Tom’s Farm, and camp overnight at Glen Ivy RV Park. Hardly primitive, it has a fire ring, water, flush toilets, showers, a pool, and a restaurant. The distance is about 30 miles. We’ll return Sunday morning and be back for an optional group lunch before going our separate ways. You are encouraged to go self contained, but in the past it worked fine for those who love the camping and hate the hauling to use a private sag. This isn't a problem as both sites allows a vehicle. Usually the driver eats with us and sometimes even camps with us.

This will be a no-drop, cooperative outing. Does this sound like fun but you're hesitant due to lack of experience? Just sign on! Old timers will have extra gear to share and can carry some of your stuff. Traveling light is always recommended, but you will want a tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, toiletries, and spare clothes. Feel free to invite a biker/camper friend. Be sure to communicate what gear you need to borrow, or have extra, or what extra luggage capacity you have. There's only room for 12 people so indicate interest as soon as possible. For details contact normmoyer@aol.com.

07:00 PMGeneral Club Meeting - Randy Profeta - Irvine resident Randy Profeta started endurance racing with his three sons at the "tender" age of 46. Since then, Randy has won his class at the Mountain Bike World 24-Hour Solo Championships twice and visited the podium twice more. He has completed some of the most challenging endurance events, both road and mountain bike. Randy's luck took a turn a few years ago when he was injured during a training ride. Hear Randy's account of the importance of fitness and how cycling literally saved his life. Randy will share a slide presentation of some of his more memorable races with BCI.

Misaligned joints and over stressed muscle groups can hinder your goals to stay active for a lifetime! Dr. Daniel Kempff will be presenting the basic science behind cycling biomechanics and how they relate to common injuries found among regular cyclists. Dr. Dan will also cover important nutrition tips for faster recovery and increased muscle endurance.
